AGREEMENT REACHED BETWEEN THE FINNISH MINISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE FINNISH FOREST COMPANY UPM ON PROTECTING FORESTS IN KAINUU

The Ministry of the Environment and UPM have agreed upon compensation for the Natura 2000 sites and areas designated for protection under national conservation programmes in UPM's forests in Kainuu, Finland UPM writes in a press release. The total value of the agreement is €3.4 million. Part of the purchase price will be covered by a land exchange procedure.

A chronic timber shortage has hit Kenya forcing the country to turn to expensive imports from neighboring countries. The fort main plantation species such as cypress and pine, which accounted for over 80 per cent of the country's entire plantation area, are now at risk of extinction as their prices too has also increased by double digits.

The Gothenburg-based start-up company SootTech do further business with paper and pulp industry. SootTech develops and sells equipment for rebuilding and improving efficiency of cleaning systems in the pulp and power industries. The company's product High Impact Soot System (HISS)  increase the efficiency in the pulp mill recovery boilers.

Planetearth reports metal armour protects plants from disease. Plants can resist bacterial infection by building up toxic metals in their leaves, according to a new study. Researchers are already experimenting with the idea of phyto-remediation where they are using plants to clean up polluted sites.

Officials from Freshwater tissue company expect that approximately $50 million must be spent on water quality and air emissions improvement measures according to the magazine Times-Standard.
