Higher wood fiber costs and lower pulp prices

November 14, 2011 by timbercommunity

Global hardwood pulp producers face higher wood fiber costs and lower pulp prices, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. Profit margins are being squeezed for many hardwood pulp producers worldwide with higher wood fiber costs and lower product prices. The hardwood wood fiber price index (HFPI) reached a 24-year high in the 3Q/11 at the same time as hardwood pulp prices fell by 26% from June through October, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly.

CO2 emissions from deforestation have slowed up by 27 %

November 29, 2010 by timbercommunity

Researchers learned that CO2 emissions from deforestation have slowed by 27% since 2000 compared to the 1990s. This is primarly because the rate at which tropical rainforests in countries like Indonesia and Brazil are being  cut down has slowed down; and strategies to encourage tree planting in Europe and Asia have helped provide a carbon sink so called because trees absorb CO2.

The cost for wood fiber accounts for almost 60 percent of the total production costs when manufacturing pulp. Both softwood and hardwood wood fiber price indices, SFPI and HFPI, have increased about six percent over the past year, according to the WRQ

After a temporary drop in the 2Q, the Softwood Wood Fiber Price Index (SFPI) increased again in the 3Q to the highest level seen during the financial crises, according the Wood Resource Quarterly. The SFPI was US$99.80/odmt in the 3Q, up $1.51/odmt from the previous quarter and $6.68/odmt from the same quarter in 2009. Prices did not go up only because of a weakening US dollar against most other currencies, but also because prices in the local currencies were up in Europe, Western US and Western Canada.

December 14, 2009 by timbercommunity

Measuring and monitoring, baselines and leakage. Shaping the global agenda for forest and climate change.

Abstract
This learning session will showcase different approaches to measuring and monitoring (MRV) past and future emissions of carbon caused by deforestation and forest degradation – ranging from large-scale assessments to small-scale community-based monitoring; from direct measurements to models; from lessons learned in Latin America to Africa and Asia.

SCA initiates actions to restore competitiveness of its tissue supply chain operations in Italy and France

March 30, 2009 by timbercommunity

In line with SCA’s overall goal to increase the efficiency in its supply chain and lower costs, SCA today announced a new supply chain structure for its tissue operations in Italy, including the closure of the Pratovecchio mill. Measures are also being taken at our plant in Orléans, France, which will improve efficiency.

After an extensive evaluation of SCA’s Italian supply chain operation, a new structure has been developed to improve performance. As a result, all finished product manufacturing for Italy, including the production for folded products, rolled products and coloured mother reels, will be consolidated in the Lucca area.
