Stora Enso to build EUR 1.6 billion pulp mill in China

Stora Enso to build world-class EUR 1.6 billion consumer board and pulp mill in China. Stora Enso plans to build plantation-based integrated board and pulp mills at Beihai city in Guangxi, southern China. The mill site will initially include a 450 000 tonnes per year state-of-the-art paperboard machine and pulp capacity of 900 000 tonnes per year, including necessary energy plant and auxiliary facilities. In a unique set-up, the board and pulp mills will be self-sufficiently integrated with wood supply from 120 000 hectares of self-managed eucalyptus plantations. The ultimate target is to expand the paperboard capacity to 900 000 tonnes at a later stage.

Global sawlog prices fell in late 2011

Global sawlog prices fell in late 2011, especially in lumber export-oriented countries such as Western Canada, Finland, Sweden, Russia and New Zealand, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly. Weakening lumber markets in Asia and Europe reduced demand for sawlogs in many countries late last year. As a result, log prices in a number of the major lumberproducing countries in the world fell during the second half of 2011, according to the market report the Wood Resource Quarterly. 

European Commission approve deal between UPM and Myllykoski

The European Commission has approved the deal in which the Finnish forestry company UPM buys competitor Myllykoski writes YLE. It was in December, UPM announced the deal, but the Commission was concerned that it would push up the price of newsprint.
The deal is worth about EUR 900 million and the goal is to strengthen UPM's profitability and cost efficiency. Myllykoski was deeply in debt before UPM took over.

UPM Shotton's materials recovery facility officially inaugurated

UPM CEO Jussi Pesonen and the Ambassador of Finland to the United Kingdom officially opened the £17m Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at UPM’s Shotton paper mill today. The state-of-the-art facility, supported by a £1.7m investment by the Welsh Government, has the capacity to sort 270,000 of comingled material and has been designed to achieve the highest recovery rates in the UK of 99 per cent. In addition to a unique design, the facility has the latest sorting and screening equipment in the market.

UPM will begin the production of coated fine paper sheets at its Kymi Mill in Kouvola in autumn 2012

 The expansion of the Kymi Mill finishing room will begin in autumn 2011. The expansion will cost approximately €15 million. The project includes a new sheeting, ream wrapping and pallet packaging line. Technical changes related to the handling of the reels of paper machine 8 will also be made. The aim of the new sheeting line is to serve customers in close-by markets more efficiently and flexibly, and to support the production efficiency of the integrated mill site.

UPM Raflatac closes acquisition of labelstock coating operation in Brazil

UPM Raflatac has closed its acquisition of Gumtac, the Brazilian labelstock coating and slitting business of the BIC Group. The acquisition was announced in February 2011. Gumtac employs approximately 35 people in its operations in Rio de Janeiro. “Combining Gumtac’s well-managed operations with UPM Raflatac’s high-quality brand recognition gives us an excellent platform to further grow our business with label printer partners in Brazil and throughout South America,” says Jouko Lähepelto, Senior Vice President, Americas & Asia Pacific.

UPM to refurbish Voikkaa hydropower plant

UPM will refurbish the Voikkaa hydropower plant located on the Kymi River in south east Finland. The refurbishment work will start up late 2011, and will take about two years.The refurbishment of Voikkaa hydropower plant is part of UPM’s systematic modernisation programme of its hydropower plants in Finland.

Stora Enso extends maturity of International Finance Corporation loan facility in China

Stora Enso has signed a loan facility agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to extend the maturity of USD 128 million in syndicated loans under its existing facility with IFC. IFC is a member of the World Bank Group focussed on private sector development in emerging markets. The initial loan facility for China was signed between Stora Enso and IFC in June 2005. The amount was increased to USD 300 million in June 2006, of which USD 128 million is now extended.
