Higher worldwide demand for forest products has increased global shipments of softwood logs by 20 percent in 2010, reports the WRQ. This year may be a turning point for global log trade, which had fallen 30 percent between 2007 and 2009.

As a sign of improved markets for forest products in early 2010, global trade of logs increased by almost 20 percent during the first quarter as compared to the same quarter in 2009. An estimated 67 million m3 of softwood logs were traded in the world in 2009, which can be compared to over 95 million m3 in the record-year of 2007. Read more

Moelven earns 141 million in second quarter

Moelven earned NOK 141 million from operations in the year’s second quarter, which is NOK 117 million more than last year for the same period. The main reasons for the improved results are better operating conditions, the effect of cost-cutting measures and higher prices for finished goods in the Timber and Wood divisions. Read more

Strong earnings for Bergs Timber AB

Rising prices of sawn timber has made that Bergs Timber AB has turned loss into profit according to the interimreport September 1, 2009 - 31 May 2010.  Improved earnings compared to the same period last year mainly due to improved selling prices for lumber and increased circulation of products. Negative factors were increased raw material costs and lower production and offloading earnings. 
So far in 2010 according to statistics forest industries increased production of sawn timber in Sweden by 6 percent and in Finland by 27 percent compared to same period last year. Reports of increased production will also be from other major producing countries such as Germany and Austria. Stocks, however, remain comparatively low but is approaching normal levels.

A new wood preservative product based on silicon

A new wood preservative product based on silicon has been launched. The product named Sioo gives wood mold protection and finish. The effect occurs after mineral silicon crystals goes inside the timber and destroys the harmful organism physically. Read more

Wood fiber costs rose in the US South and in the 1Q because of improved pulp markets and a tight wood fiber supply. In Western US, production of pulp and paper declined resulting in lower wood fiber costs, reports the NAWFR

Global softwood lumber markets were mixed in the 3Q/09 - up in China, while still slow in the US and Japan, reports WRQ

 Softwood lumber imports to China have increased by 81% in 2009. It is not inconceivable that China will import more lumber than Japan in 2009, a historical first. Canadian sawmills have been the major beneficiaries of this new fast-growing market, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly.

Rapid expansion of wood pellet capacity in North America drives sawdust and wood chip prices upward, reports the North American Wood Fiber Review

 The wood pellet industry in North America has grown six-fold since 2004, reports the North American Wood Fiber Review. The dramatic expansion has resulted in higher costs for sawdust and wood chips in the regions with the greatest growth, including Western US and Canada.
