Biochar Provisions Included in the Amercian Power Act

biochar 2010American Power Act (APA), a plan to secure America's energy future, contains several important provisions to support deployment of biochar as a climate mitigation and adaptation tool.  Biochar is charcoal created by pyrolysis of biomass. Its primary use is not for fuel, but atmospheric carbon capture and storage. Biochar is of increasing interest because of concerns about climate change caused by emissions of carbon dioxide. Wind farm will supply pulp mill with energy

The Norwegian energy company Statkraft and the cooperative forest owner association Södra agreed in October 2009 on cooperation in renewable energy. The goal of the collaboration is to develop wind farms and realize the existing portfolio of over 300 wind turbines of around 1.6 TWh of annual energy production. Construction of the first wind park is expected to begin in early May 2010. Estimated start of production for the six new wind turbines is November 2010.

 The wood pellet industry in North America has grown six-fold since 2004, reports the North American Wood Fiber Review. The dramatic expansion has resulted in higher costs for sawdust and wood chips in the regions with the greatest growth, including Western US and Canada.

 The pulp industry in Canada has sharply reduced production the past two years both as a result of weaker pulp and paper markets worldwide and also because of less competitive pulp manufacturing facilities. Wood costs have increased for many plants as the result of reduced availability of relatively inexpensive sawmill residuals, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review.

Europe's first unit to convert woody biomass to pyrolysis oil

The Italian company Industria e Innovazione will pursue Europe's first RTP(R) pyrolysis unit to convert woody biomass to pyrolysis oil for use in power generation. Pyrolysis oil is a synthetic fuel under investigation as substitute for petroleum. Read more

Nuclear Target Among Consortium with Swedish Paper and Pulp Companies

The energy giant Vattenfall and a newly formed company Industrikraft has signed a memorandum of understanding on joint power generation. The goal is to build a new nuclear power plant for the industry says Mats Gustafsson, president of Industrikraft in Sweden AB.
Five companies are also supporting the new company among them pulp and paper companies Holmen, SCA, Stora Enso and Eka Chemicals. Industrikraft is also supported by the mining company Boliden. The Swedish pulp and paper industry is simply dependent on electricity at competitive prices.

The Paper and Allied Products Industry in pulp and paper annually spends $3.6 billion or about 2.6% of its overall operating costs to operate electric motor systems in the US. Savings opportunities at the mill level are significant, amounting to between $480,000 and $659,000 per year.
