CA and Fred.Olsen Renewables invest in wind power in northern Sweden

SCA and the Norwegian company Fred.Olsen Renewables are forming a jointly owned company to focus on constructing a wind farm on SCA’s land in Västernorrland in northern Sweden. The area has a potential annual wind-power production of about 2 TWh.

Holmen and Statkraft perform wind surveys

Swedish forest company Holmen and Europe’s largest renewable energy company Statkraft have signed a cooperation agreement for wind surveys in five potential wind farms in the Norrkoping area. The areas are wholly or partly on Holmen's land. The surveys will start in autumn 2011, and decisions on any further cooperation will be made following completion of the wind survey work.

Wood costs for the global pulp industry have increased 17 percent the past two years; only the US South has bucked the trend

Global market pulp production increased by seven percent in 2010, which increased demand for wood raw-material. As a result, prices for wood chips and pulplogs were up in most regions of the world, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly.

Global trade of wood chips was up 25 percent in 2010 because of increased production of pulp and paper products worldwide. China showed the greatest growth in chip imports with an increase over 400 percent in the past two years, as reported in the WRQ. The international financial crisis in 2009 had a major negative impact on worldwide demand for pulp and paper products. As a result, the consumption of wood chips and pulpwood for pulp production was lower, and global trade of wood chips fell accordingly. However, in 2010, pulp markets improved and global shipments of wood chips were up substantially.

 

Multi-million investment in research with the aim to reduce electricity consumption for the SCA and other forestry companies

The research is about getting an energy-efficient manufacture of mechanical and chemi-mechanical pulp. - The goal is to reduce electrical energy consumption in pulp production by 50 percent. Therefore, the research project have a major importance to our competitiveness, "says Örjan Pettersson at SCA, in a pressrelease. Mid Sweden University is investing 12 million in the project. 36 million additional comes from the forestry companies, SCA, Stora Enso and Holmen and machine manufacturers, Metso and Andritz. 

Hybrid aspen and poplar can enhance Sweden's supply of renewable energy according to new report

By 2020, half of all energy in Sweden will come from renewable resources since carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced. A new report from the Forestry Research and SLU made on behalf of the Swedish Energy Agency focus on fast growing trees. Higher production, shorter orbital period, higher ROI and better diversification of risk compared to traditional forestry suggest a greater emphasis on poplar and hybrid aspen.

New long term power supply agreement for Norske Skog

Norske Skog is another paper mill company that has signed a long-term energy contract. This time the agreement is signed with Norweigian energy company Statkraft for supply of power for the paper mill at Skogn in Mid-Norway according to a press release from the company. The contract secures the continued operations at the mill, which needed a new long term power supply contract by the beginning of 2011. The new contract with Statkraft secures yearly supply of 0.8 TWh of electricity per year until December 31, 2022.

Holmen signs electricity supply agreement with Vattenfall

Holmen has reached a new long-term electricity supply agreement with Vattenfall. The agreement means that Holmen will purchase some 0.9 TWh of electricity per year from Vattenfall - almost a third of the purchased electricity that Holmen needs - for a six-year period beginning in 2016.

The CTMP line at Rottneros Mill has been at a standstill for around ten days, which corresponds to a loss of production of approximately 2,500 tonnes. The stoppage is due to the combination of extremely high electricity prices and high timber costs resulting in sales of marginal volumes being unprofitable.

biochar 2010American Power Act (APA), a plan to secure America's energy future, contains several important provisions to support deployment of biochar as a climate mitigation and adaptation tool.  Biochar is charcoal created by pyrolysis of biomass. Its primary use is not for fuel, but atmospheric carbon capture and storage. Biochar is of increasing interest because of concerns about climate change caused by emissions of carbon dioxide. Senators Kerry and Lieberman released a discussion draft of the legislative plan on Wednesday.
