New automation will enable efficient and safe evaporation control.
2009-04-16 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order from Södra Cell Värö to expand the automation system of their new evaporation plant. The expansion will include extending the current ABB System 800xA by adding two additional AC800 controllers and operator stations for controlling and monitoring evaporation. The new system will be fully integrated with existing mill automation.

Södra Cell Värö will be able to test the entire evaporation plant and train the operators before start-up. The simulator will then be used both for testing new parameters and most importantly to continuously train the operators so that after start-up they can quickly and effectively deal with any problems that might occur. This enhances safety and makes the operation more cost-effective.

The simulator is based on reliable technology originally developed for the oil and gas industry, that can now be offered to other industries for a reasonable cost.

ABB Industrial IT Simulators are also installed in Södra Cell’s Östrand and Obbola mills.
At Södra Cell Värö, the simulator will be integrated with a process model from Andritz. During August 2009, ABB will perform testing the evaporation plant, using the ABB IT Simulator, to prepare for millwide start-up in October.
The new evaporation plant is part of a large investment of approximately 500 million SEK,that Södra Cell Värö made to increase the mill’s energy efficiency and productivity. The mill produces 400,000 tons of pulp annually and has 350 employees. With a total production capacity of slightly more than 2 million tons, Södra Cell is one of the world’s largest producers of bleached pulp.
