Manufacturing moulded chairs with DuraPulp

May 13, 2009 by timbercommunity

Södra has made its debut in the design world with DuraPulp. Which can be used for such applications as manufacturing moulded chairs.

Often described as the most important event in the design world, the Milan fair was also the launch location for material tests of the new Södra Cell pulp, DuraPulp.
A key member of the Södra team at the exhibition is Margaretha Söderqvist Lindblad, R&D project manager and media contact during the fair. She confirms the strong interest shown by visitors.
“There is a lot of curiosity in the material itself and its broad application area. We're also handing out information cards printed on DuraPulp, so everyone who’s interested can take a sample of the material home with them,” she says.
In a creative collaboration between Södra, design and architecture company Claesson Koivisto Rune and research company STFI Packforsk, a children’s chair is being developed in the new material. The chair has been developed with the mutual ambition of finding innovative new materials and matching them with potential new products and end products.
Thérèse Thelin, head of marketing communications for Södra Cell, is also involved in the Milan fair.
“We’re very proud to be represented here in this forum with established companies and prominent organisations in the design industry. It will be extremely exciting to see what this introduction leads to,” she says.
Parupu is a chair that can take the rough and tumble of children playing, can be stacked and wiped down, and is made to last a childhood. It is manufactured in a speciality pulp from Södra Cell with PLA as an additive. PLA is a biodegradable plastic made from maize starch and cane sugar. This makes it an ecofriendly, recyclable material that replaces plastic as a material in this application. It is also suitable for producing quality packaging and labels, and can be run in a normal paper machine.
