The forest company Stora Enso accused of illegal practices at the establishment of tree plantations in Guangxi in southern China. RRI Research, Rights and Resource Initiative, pointing in particular at how Stora Enso uses local intermediaries when they rent land for plantations.
According to RRI's report, the forest giant often break the law, and even threatened farmers who do not want to rent thair land. Stora Enso said in their reply that it has begun to go through underwriting leasing contracts to verify their legality. The company has over two thousand contracts, affecting tens of thousands people. In a reply they critizise Stora Enso for being slow to react to the problems.
Stora Ens also have beem critizised in Brazil for example, among environmentally active and hundreds of lawsuits pending against the forest giant. At Stora Enso said that it would be no laws have been broken in Brazil. The magazine Financial Times ranked Stora Enso, among companies with the strongest social responsibility for the tenth time.
