Very strong report from Stora Enso Fourth Quarter

Forest group Stora Enso reported a profit of 80.6 million euros for the fourth quarter. During the same period in 2008 was there a loss of 846 million euros.

Holmen increase profits - reduces dividend

The paper manufacturer Holmen reports a profit before tax of 332 million SEK  in the fourth quarter (195) in the interim report. This was slightly better since analysts expected to present a pre-tax profit of 307 million SEK for the fourth quarter,according to a compilation of 13 analysts' forecasts SME Direkt also compared with 195 million the same quarter last year.

The share rose 2.25 after the report was released. Pulp prices have in recent months has reached a historic high (U.S. $ 820/ton) and continues to rise week by week. The staff reduction of 100 persons in progress at Holmen's mills in Braviken expected to have its full impact on the costs towards the end of 2010. Read more

An article in Sciencenews describes that scientists in Stanford have made batteries and supercapacitors with little more than ordinary office paper and some carbon and silver nanomaterials.  China became the major import destination for many globally traded forest products in 2009. The country is the world’s largest importer of wood pulp and logs, and was the 2nd largest importer of softwood lumber in the world in the 2Q/09, reports the Wood Resource Quarterly.

Nuclear Target Among Consortium with Swedish Paper and Pulp Companies

The energy giant Vattenfall and a newly formed company Industrikraft has signed a memorandum of understanding on joint power generation. The goal is to build a new nuclear power plant for the industry says Mats Gustafsson, president of Industrikraft in Sweden AB.
Five companies are also supporting the new company among them pulp and paper companies Holmen, SCA, Stora Enso and Eka Chemicals. Industrikraft is also supported by the mining company Boliden. The Swedish pulp and paper industry is simply dependent on electricity at competitive prices. Read more

Södra Raises Pulp Prices

Södra Cell is raising the price of both its softwood and hardwood pulps by USD 30/tonne from 1 December. This will take softwood pulp prices to USD 880/tonne and hardwood pulp to USD 780/tonne.

2007 started with a price of $ 730 per tonne of softwood pulp. The latest increase means that the price would go up by $ 30 compared to the closest previous level. Read more
