Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday ordered Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu to draw up a special program to boost the firefighting service. He said there was a pressing need to adopt "advanced firefighting equipment, modern fire safety systems."  he said: "Separate funding will need to be set aside for that," Russian President Dmitry Medvedev released a video address to the country in response to the forest fires, which are raging out of control.

The supply and demand for Eucalyptus logs in Brazil has been in balance the past year, which has resulted in stable log prices in the local currency, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly.

Eucalyptus pulplog prices in Brazil have been very stable in the local currency and they have hardly changed at all since 2006, as reported in the Wood Resource Quarterly. In US dollar terms, on the other hand, wood fiber costs have increased substantially because of the strengthening of the Brazilian Real. Read more

New patented method for traceability in the forestry industry

New traceability technology can revolutionize the global forestry industry. The growth company Otmetka Log Marking AB outside Uppsala is now, after ten years’ development work ready to present the marking system Woodpecker. With this solution a code or label is stamped into the wood. The code can then be read by an image analysis system - similar to the interpretation of number plates for congestion charging in Stockholm. The system can guarantee full traceability of the timber from where the tree grew in the forest to the saw.

In the 1Q/2010, the Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI) reached US$76.77/m3, the highest level in over a year, according to the WRQ. Much of the increase has been the result of a weaker dollar, but log costs have also gone up in local currencies in Europe.

 Global conifer sawlog prices have steadily increased for four consecutive quarters in all major world regions. The Global Sawlog Price Index (GSPI), which is based on quarterly conifer sawlog prices in 19 key regions worldwide, increased from US$65.89/m3 in the 1Q/09 to US$76.77/m3 in the 1Q/10, a climb of almost 17%. The biggest price increases the past year have occurred in Oceania and Northern Europe, while North America has seen only moderate upward price adjustments. Read more

Licenses will reduce trade with illegal timber

EU is working hard to get to a control system that will block imports of illegally logged timber. The Swedish Forest Agency has, on behalf of the Swedish Government, presented a proposal for how the control unit should look like in Sweden, the so-called 'FLEGT licensing scheme. The system has been created to prevent illegal logging and trade in forest.  Licenses are intended to prevent imports of illegally logging and trade in forest. Read more

The light is important in reforestation

It is important to remember that good lighting conditions are created in the forest for replanting shows a doctor diss. named Regeneration in continuous cover forestry systems. Research from Charlotta Erefur at SLU in Umeå shows that the lighting is particularly important for establishment and growth of trees plants. In the study they left behind large trees to create microclimates in the gaps which is well suited for the regeneration of tree seedlings. She also tested a management method that can be performed effectively with the current logging system, and thus is cost effective. This method harvest forest in a checkered pattern that creates gaps of 0.14 hectares (1400 square meters).  Read more

Russian larch can grow rapidly in Sweden

Larch can become a more common feature of Swedish forests in the future.
- A conclusion from the trials is that material should be retrieved from fields in Russia with maritime influence, "says Lars Karlman in a statement. The data now counts Siberian larch as an indigenous tree species says Lars Karlman in a dissertation from SLU (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences).
