Norske Skog and NTE enter into long-term energy contract

Norske Skog has signed a long-term energy contract with NTE (Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk) for the supply of electricity for the paper mill at Skogn.

The new agreement, together with an agreement that was signed with Statkraft last year, secures Norske Skog Skogn sufficient energy for full operation of the mill. The agreement has been entered into on commercial terms and has a duration of 7 years from 1 January 2012. The new agreement with NTE ensures supply of 0.4 TWh per year until 31.12.2018.
 

Forest companies report questioned by leading Swedish business newspaper

Forest Company evaluates the woods too high in their reports according to the business magazine SvD. At weaker quarter, forest companies assess their forest resources and exploit the forest to clean up quarterly results according to analysts.  According to analysts SvD Näringsliv been in contact with it is common that companies use their forest assets to report higher individual results, for example, during a quarter in which they have high recurring costs. The analysts suggest that companies may give a false picture of their performance. -The question is how the forest can jump up in value a single quarter, says financial analyst Peter Malmqvist to the newspaper.

Global Forest and Paper Industry Net Earnings Summary

PwC release the Net Earnings Summary Q1 2011. The quarterly report is prepared by PwC from financial statements issued by the companies. The summary identifies trends in performance by comparing financial results with previous periods.
Key highlights include:
Canada: Most Canadian forest and paper companies posted higher earnings for the first quarter of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010 despite continued weakness in North American demand, and volatility in the US housing market.
US: Ten of the largest US-based forest and paper companies reported net earnings consistent with results from the previous quarter.
Europe: All of the companies in the region posted improved earnings compared to the same period in 2010.

Plans forests owned by the Swedish Church will be corporated

An investigation by the Swedish Church proposes to form a joint forestry company that may be formed already January 2013. Swedish Church is collectively the country's fifth largest forest owner.

Japan is in urgent need of pre-fabricated houses and manufactured wood products in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami. Longer term, imports of commodity products such as plywood, lumber and logs are likely to increase.

SkogsElmia 2011 will be the biggest, most in-demand forestry fair in the Nordic region

Opening on 26 May, it is also this year’s biggest forestry fair in the Nordic region. The demo fair focuses on private forest owners but even for forestry officials and contractors, SkogsElmia is the year’s most important meeting place and a source of inspiration, knowledge and the latest innovations.

Sawlog prices in Western US were up about 20 percent in 2010 as an result of increased competition for logs from log buyers in China, South Korea and Japan, according to the North American Wood Fiber Review.

Seattle, USA. Softwood sawlog prices have trended upwards in all major regions of North America over the past two years. The biggest increases have occurred in the US Northwest, where the log export market has had a major impact on the supply-demand balance.

EU Parliamentarian worried about the EU forest policy

A common and regulated forest policy for all EU countries can be a threat to the Swedish forestry warned European parlamentarian Lena Ek (C) at the Swedish Forestry Board meeting - reports online magazine Corren. The parlamentarian described policymakers in Brussels with no experience of  forestry, but they will during the spring prepare a comprehensive forest strategy for all of Europe.

Continuing Resolution in the US impacts Forest Service programs

The sixth continuing resolution (H J Res 48) of Fiscal Year 2011 passed into law this week that will fund the federal US government through April 8th. The spending bill included an overall $6 billion dollars in reduced spending from current levels. The savings came from a number of program reductions and terminations across the federal government including the elimination of earmarked projects under various Forest Service programs.
