Norske Skog: New long-term energy contract for Saugbrugs

Paper World - Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS (photo) has signed a long-term agreement with Statkraft for the supply of electricity for the paper mill in Halden. - We are very pleased with the agreement. Norske Skog Saugbrugs is important, both for the group and for the forestry industry in Southern Norway. This helps to secure jobs in Saugbrugs, says Sven Ombudstvedt, President and CEO in Norske Skog and chairman of the board in Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS. The new agreement with Statkraft secures an annual supply of 1.0 TWh up to 31 December 2020. The agreement shall enter into force on 1 May 2013. The new agreement ensures almost full energy coverage for Saugbrugs over the next few years. Norske Skogindustrier ASA has terminated its long-term group agreement from 1998 that applied to supply of energy in Southern Norway. - It is inappropriate and not commercially optimal to proceed with a group agreement in Southern Norway when we can have a custom-made agreement that meets Saugbrugs' future requirements for energy supplies. The contract is stipulated in euros to reduce the currency exposure, says Ombudstvedt. - Saugbrugs is one of the most environmentally friendly and efficient paper mills in Europe. A strong Norwegian krone and the challenging market conditions in the industry mean that the mill must have access to stable and secure energy supplies at acceptable price in order to maintain operations, says Roy Vardheim, managing director in Norske Skog Saugbrugs. Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS employs around 530 people. The mill has an annual production capacity of 530 000 tonnes of magazine paper (SC/super calendered), with Germany and the United States as the largest single markets. (Norske Skog Saugbrugs)

Clariant launches truly PFOA-free Cartaguard KHI for greaseproof and safer food packaging papers

Paper World - Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
Picture: Cartaguard® KHI -truly PFOA-free grease resistance for food papers and board (Photo: Clariant) - Truly PFOA-free grease repellent for food packaging paper - Supports use of healthier, eco-friendlier food packaging by brand owner - Clariant innovation fulfils requirements for both effective and safer food packaging Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, introduces Cartaguard® KHI – a revolutionary, high-performance and totally PFOA-free grease resistant additive for effective and safer grease-resistant food papers and board. New Cartaguard KHI supports the trend toward more eco-friendly solutions for hand-held, ready-to-eat foods such as burgers, pizza, pastries and confectionary. Unlike some other existing fluorine technologies, it makes paper grease resistant without releasing impurities into the packaging. It penetrates into the paper or board and attaches to each fiber to create a protective surface that protects hands and clothing from grease. As a result, manufacturers can produce viable, safer grease resistant packaging to replace traditional plastics and paper-plastic combinations. Dr. Frédéric Mabire, Global Product Line Manager from Clariant Paper Specialties comments: “Cartaguard KHI is a technological breakthrough for the market being both high performance and truly PFOA-free. We are delighted to present the market with this big step forward in effective, PFOA-free solutions for recyclable paper packaging, part of our on-going development of a new generation of grease-resistant paper additives.” Cartaguard KHI is the first grease resistant additive to be based on C3 technology. Clariant’s innovative, patented fluorinated chemistry means it cannot break down to form PFOA, yet Cartaguard KHI delivers high level grease resistance demanded by the market. Its molecular structure consists of long-side chains that repel oil and fat effectively, ensuring outstanding oil and grease barrier performance compared with the current PFOA-free benchmark. The new impregnating agent also brings production advantages to the paper mill. It is easy to process because it generates hardly any foam during paper production and does not affect either the adhesive or printing properties of the paper. Cartaguard KHI is already approved for food contact applications by the German Federal Institute for Risk Evaluation (BfR) and the US American regulatory agency FDA, and meets the stringent requirements for food service packaging. ANDRITZ to modernize two boiler plants in Sweden: capacity increase of up to 20%

Paper World - Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
International technology Group ANDRITZ has received orders from Stora Enso Nymölla AB and Domsjö Fabriker AB, Sweden, to modernize a recovery boiler and a sulfite liquor boiler. Due to technology and equipment supplied by ANDRITZ Energy & Environment (AE&E), the capacity of the two boiler plants can be increased by up to 20%. Both start-ups are scheduled for 2013. For Stora Enso’s liquor recovery boiler in Nymölla, which went into operation in 1971, AE&E will supply the plate-type heat exchangers for pre-heating the combustion air in combination with an economizer to pre-heat the feed water. This technical concept is characterized by a long lifetime of the boiler and lower maintenance effort required; thus scheduled plant shutdowns can be reduced to a minimum and the plant’s capacity increased significantly. The scope of supply for sulfite liquor boiler no. 9 at Domsjö Fabriker, in operation since 1962, comprises replacement of the super heater and evaporator heating surfaces, as well as partial replacement of the front and rear walls of the liquor boiler. The new AE&E design will improve the fouling behavior of the boiler and enhance efficiency by up to 20%. Due to the very short assembly period of 18 days, the customer will only have a very brief production shutdown. (Andritz AG)

Following a good final quarter of financial year 2012/2013, Heidelberg achieves a key milestone ...

Paper World - Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
... with a clearly positive operating result excluding special items -Sales up 5 percent at EUR 2.735 billion -Clearly positive EBIT excluding special items of EUR 28 million - still recording net loss -Q4 best quarter as expected, with positive free cash flow reducing net financial debt to around EUR 260 million According to preliminary figures, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) recorded higher sales in financial year 2012/2013 (April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013) than in the previous year thanks to the expected strong fourth quarter. In line with the company's own forecasts, the operating result excluding special items improved significantly. Preliminary Group sales after 12 months were up 5 percent on the previous year's figure (EUR 2.596 billion) at EUR 2.735 billion. Despite a number of countervailing effects, the growth in volume combined with the savings made by the Focus 2012 efficiency program improved the preliminary result of operating activities (EBIT) excluding special items to EUR 28 million (previous year: EUR 3 million). Special items associated with Focus 2012 totaled EUR 65 million in the financial year just closed. Due to special items and the negative financial result, preliminary calculations indicate that the net loss will be around EUR -110 million (previous year: EUR -230 million). Preliminary incoming orders in the period under review increased to EUR 2.822 billion (previous year: EUR 2.555 billion). The preliminary free cash flow was around EUR -20 million (previous year: EUR +10 million) and thus only slightly negative despite the high one-time payments for Focus 2012. "By meeting our forecast for the year, we have reached a key milestone on our way to profitability," said Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. "Focus 2012 lays the foundation for us to start making a profit again from financial year 2013/2014 onwards. By means of optimized structures we have also made a start on adapting the company more effectively to the market segments in which we operate and thus increase future profit contributions," he added. The fourth quarter of the financial year just closed was, as expected, the strongest in terms of preliminary key figures. For example, sales for the period January to March 2013 rose to EUR 830 million (previous year: EUR 785 million). The result of operating activities excluding special items for the quarter under review improved from EUR 22 million in the previous year to EUR 60 million. Negative special items amounted to EUR 41 million in the fourth quarter alone - mainly due to provisions for stepping up specific measures as part of Focus 2012. Incoming orders in the fourth quarter were up on the previous year's level (EUR 580 million) at EUR 620 million. The free cash flow in Q4 was clearly positive at around EUR 70 million (previous year: EUR 33 million). This reduced the net financial debt at the end of the financial year from EUR 325 million in the previous quarter to around EUR 260 million. "Our Focus 2012 efficiency program is being implemented as planned. Given the changed market conditions, we have intensified a number of measures to secure our future profitability targets," said Heidelberg CFO Dirk Kaliebe. "Heidelberg has a sound financial footing and benefits from a stable liquidity framework. The strong free cash flow in the final quarter has reduced the net financial debt to a low level." HydroSeal: Innovative sealing strip with integrated lubrication

Paper World - Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
With HydroSeal Voith has launched a patented sealing strip system with integrated lubricating water feed that allows substantial savings to be made in lubricating water and drive power. For the first time, HydroSeal provides the option of dispensing with the conventional lubricating shower regardless of type of suction roll or manufacturer. Until now, an upstream lubricating shower is used for lubricating up to five sealing strips. This results in an uneven lubricating water profile over the width of the strip and deficient lubrication of the strips at the back in the direction of rotation, resulting in faster wear and higher drive load. In addition, the overlapping nozzle fans of lubricating water impair the CD moisture profile. As a significant amount of water is wiped off at the first sealing strip the web is remoistened and paper quality suffers as a result. This is why Voith developed HydroSeal, a sealing strip system that has lubricant water distribution built into its design. Thanks to HydroSeal the lubricating water is distributed continuously over the entire width of the sealing strip - allowing the sealing strip surface to continuously being covered with a homogeneous film of lubricating water. The efficient feed substantially reduces the amount of lubricating water required. Moreover, this new design prevents the remoistening of the paper web and also improves the CD moisture profile. Trials carried out in the field on our customers' machines demonstrated that by using HydroSeal lubricating water consumption could be reduced by up to 87%. Specific energy consumption was cut by 9%. This means that even on just one suction roll, HydroSeal can achieve savings of 100,000 or more euros per year, offering a distinct economic benefit as well as an ecological advantage. New stock preparation system online at Schönfelder Papierfabrik

Paper World - Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
The stock preparation system supplied by Voith to Schönfelder Papierfabrik went successfully into operation in the middle of 2012. Multifunctional and very flexible, the stock preparation is equipped with the Voith LowEnergyFlotation (LEF), the latest generation of deinking flotation for removing ink and hydrophobic contaminants from recovered paper. The LEF is easy to operate, low-maintenance and self-cleaning. The energy requirement is low at 10 to 15 kWh/day. The LEF thus promises high energy savings of up to 50% compared with the model previously installed. Schönfelder Papierfabrik decided in favor of the new InfiltraDiscfilter in the BlueLine product line, along with other products. It guarantees that the pulp suspension is dewatered reliably and in an almost maintenance-free way. The core of the InfiltraDiscfilter is its bag-free BaglessPlus disc. This disc filter has an especially high capacity, since the filter surface is increased due to the corrugated surface. In addition, Schönfelder Papierfabrik chose a new dispersion system from Voith. Holger Hampel, Manager of Schönfelder Papierfabrik, emphasizes the success of this project: “You can rely on Voith’s quality. On the basis of the very good quality and performance data achieved from the very beginning, we were able to approve the system without warranty runs. The result simply convinced us.” Schönfelder Papierfabrik in Annaberg-Buchholz, Germany, produces more than 50,000 metric tons of graphic paper and specialty paper annually on a working width of 3,300 mm in a basis weight range of 45 to 120 g/m². The product line includes various paper grades such as offset, office, volume, envelope and improved newsprint as well as wallpaper base and liner paper. (Voith Paper GmbH & Co KG)
