Norske Skog: New long-term energy contract for Saugbrugs

Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS (photo) has signed a long-term agreement with Statkraft for the supply of electricity for the paper mill in Halden. - We are very pleased with the agreement. Norske Skog Saugbrugs is important, both for the group and for the forestry industry in Southern Norway. This helps to secure jobs in Saugbrugs, says Sven Ombudstvedt, President and CEO in Norske Skog and chairman of the board in Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS. The new agreement with Statkraft secures an annual supply of 1.0 TWh up to 31 December 2020. The agreement shall enter into force on 1 May 2013. The new agreement ensures almost full energy coverage for Saugbrugs over the next few years. Norske Skogindustrier ASA has terminated its long-term group agreement from 1998 that applied to supply of energy in Southern Norway. - It is inappropriate and not commercially optimal to proceed with a group agreement in Southern Norway when we can have a custom-made agreement that meets Saugbrugs' future requirements for energy supplies. The contract is stipulated in euros to reduce the currency exposure, says Ombudstvedt. - Saugbrugs is one of the most environmentally friendly and efficient paper mills in Europe. A strong Norwegian krone and the challenging market conditions in the industry mean that the mill must have access to stable and secure energy supplies at acceptable price in order to maintain operations, says Roy Vardheim, managing director in Norske Skog Saugbrugs. Norske Skog Saugbrugs AS employs around 530 people. The mill has an annual production capacity of 530 000 tonnes of magazine paper (SC/super calendered), with Germany and the United States as the largest single markets. (Norske Skog Saugbrugs)

Clariant launches truly PFOA-free Cartaguard KHI for greaseproof and safer food packaging papers

Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
Picture: Cartaguard® KHI -truly PFOA-free grease resistance for food papers and board (Photo: Clariant) - Truly PFOA-free grease repellent for food packaging paper - Supports use of healthier, eco-friendlier food packaging by brand owner - Clariant innovation fulfils requirements for both effective and safer food packaging Clariant, a world leader in specialty chemicals, introduces Cartaguard® KHI – a revolutionary, high-performance and totally PFOA-free grease resistant additive for effective and safer grease-resistant food papers and board. New Cartaguard KHI supports the trend toward more eco-friendly solutions for hand-held, ready-to-eat foods such as burgers, pizza, pastries and confectionary. Unlike some other existing fluorine technologies, it makes paper grease resistant without releasing impurities into the packaging. It penetrates into the paper or board and attaches to each fiber to create a protective surface that protects hands and clothing from grease. As a result, manufacturers can produce viable, safer grease resistant packaging to replace traditional plastics and paper-plastic combinations. Dr. Frédéric Mabire, Global Product Line Manager from Clariant Paper Specialties comments: “Cartaguard KHI is a technological breakthrough for the market being both high performance and truly PFOA-free. We are delighted to present the market with this big step forward in effective, PFOA-free solutions for recyclable paper packaging, part of our on-going development of a new generation of grease-resistant paper additives.” Cartaguard KHI is the first grease resistant additive to be based on C3 technology. Clariant’s innovative, patented fluorinated chemistry means it cannot break down to form PFOA, yet Cartaguard KHI delivers high level grease resistance demanded by the market. Its molecular structure consists of long-side chains that repel oil and fat effectively, ensuring outstanding oil and grease barrier performance compared with the current PFOA-free benchmark. The new impregnating agent also brings production advantages to the paper mill. It is easy to process because it generates hardly any foam during paper production and does not affect either the adhesive or printing properties of the paper. Cartaguard KHI is already approved for food contact applications by the German Federal Institute for Risk Evaluation (BfR) and the US American regulatory agency FDA, and meets the stringent requirements for food service packaging. ANDRITZ to modernize two boiler plants in Sweden: capacity increase of up to 20%

Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
International technology Group ANDRITZ has received orders from Stora Enso Nymölla AB and Domsjö Fabriker AB, Sweden, to modernize a recovery boiler and a sulfite liquor boiler. Due to technology and equipment supplied by ANDRITZ Energy & Environment (AE&E), the capacity of the two boiler plants can be increased by up to 20%. Both start-ups are scheduled for 2013. For Stora Enso’s liquor recovery boiler in Nymölla, which went into operation in 1971, AE&E will supply the plate-type heat exchangers for pre-heating the combustion air in combination with an economizer to pre-heat the feed water. This technical concept is characterized by a long lifetime of the boiler and lower maintenance effort required; thus scheduled plant shutdowns can be reduced to a minimum and the plant’s capacity increased significantly. The scope of supply for sulfite liquor boiler no. 9 at Domsjö Fabriker, in operation since 1962, comprises replacement of the super heater and evaporator heating surfaces, as well as partial replacement of the front and rear walls of the liquor boiler. The new AE&E design will improve the fouling behavior of the boiler and enhance efficiency by up to 20%. Due to the very short assembly period of 18 days, the customer will only have a very brief production shutdown. (Andritz AG)

Following a good final quarter of financial year 2012/2013, Heidelberg achieves a key milestone ...

Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
... with a clearly positive operating result excluding special items -Sales up 5 percent at EUR 2.735 billion -Clearly positive EBIT excluding special items of EUR 28 million - still recording net loss -Q4 best quarter as expected, with positive free cash flow reducing net financial debt to around EUR 260 million According to preliminary figures, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) recorded higher sales in financial year 2012/2013 (April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013) than in the previous year thanks to the expected strong fourth quarter. In line with the company's own forecasts, the operating result excluding special items improved significantly. Preliminary Group sales after 12 months were up 5 percent on the previous year's figure (EUR 2.596 billion) at EUR 2.735 billion. Despite a number of countervailing effects, the growth in volume combined with the savings made by the Focus 2012 efficiency program improved the preliminary result of operating activities (EBIT) excluding special items to EUR 28 million (previous year: EUR 3 million). Special items associated with Focus 2012 totaled EUR 65 million in the financial year just closed. Due to special items and the negative financial result, preliminary calculations indicate that the net loss will be around EUR -110 million (previous year: EUR -230 million). Preliminary incoming orders in the period under review increased to EUR 2.822 billion (previous year: EUR 2.555 billion). The preliminary free cash flow was around EUR -20 million (previous year: EUR +10 million) and thus only slightly negative despite the high one-time payments for Focus 2012. "By meeting our forecast for the year, we have reached a key milestone on our way to profitability," said Heidelberg CEO Gerold Linzbach. "Focus 2012 lays the foundation for us to start making a profit again from financial year 2013/2014 onwards. By means of optimized structures we have also made a start on adapting the company more effectively to the market segments in which we operate and thus increase future profit contributions," he added. The fourth quarter of the financial year just closed was, as expected, the strongest in terms of preliminary key figures. For example, sales for the period January to March 2013 rose to EUR 830 million (previous year: EUR 785 million). The result of operating activities excluding special items for the quarter under review improved from EUR 22 million in the previous year to EUR 60 million. Negative special items amounted to EUR 41 million in the fourth quarter alone - mainly due to provisions for stepping up specific measures as part of Focus 2012. Incoming orders in the fourth quarter were up on the previous year's level (EUR 580 million) at EUR 620 million. The free cash flow in Q4 was clearly positive at around EUR 70 million (previous year: EUR 33 million). This reduced the net financial debt at the end of the financial year from EUR 325 million in the previous quarter to around EUR 260 million. "Our Focus 2012 efficiency program is being implemented as planned. Given the changed market conditions, we have intensified a number of measures to secure our future profitability targets," said Heidelberg CFO Dirk Kaliebe. "Heidelberg has a sound financial footing and benefits from a stable liquidity framework. The strong free cash flow in the final quarter has reduced the net financial debt to a low level." HydroSeal: Innovative sealing strip with integrated lubrication

Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
With HydroSeal Voith has launched a patented sealing strip system with integrated lubricating water feed that allows substantial savings to be made in lubricating water and drive power. For the first time, HydroSeal provides the option of dispensing with the conventional lubricating shower regardless of type of suction roll or manufacturer. Until now, an upstream lubricating shower is used for lubricating up to five sealing strips. This results in an uneven lubricating water profile over the width of the strip and deficient lubrication of the strips at the back in the direction of rotation, resulting in faster wear and higher drive load. In addition, the overlapping nozzle fans of lubricating water impair the CD moisture profile. As a significant amount of water is wiped off at the first sealing strip the web is remoistened and paper quality suffers as a result. This is why Voith developed HydroSeal, a sealing strip system that has lubricant water distribution built into its design. Thanks to HydroSeal the lubricating water is distributed continuously over the entire width of the sealing strip - allowing the sealing strip surface to continuously being covered with a homogeneous film of lubricating water. The efficient feed substantially reduces the amount of lubricating water required. Moreover, this new design prevents the remoistening of the paper web and also improves the CD moisture profile. Trials carried out in the field on our customers' machines demonstrated that by using HydroSeal lubricating water consumption could be reduced by up to 87%. Specific energy consumption was cut by 9%. This means that even on just one suction roll, HydroSeal can achieve savings of 100,000 or more euros per year, offering a distinct economic benefit as well as an ecological advantage. New stock preparation system online at Schönfelder Papierfabrik

Fri, 2013-05-17 01:00
The stock preparation system supplied by Voith to Schönfelder Papierfabrik went successfully into operation in the middle of 2012. Multifunctional and very flexible, the stock preparation is equipped with the Voith LowEnergyFlotation (LEF), the latest generation of deinking flotation for removing ink and hydrophobic contaminants from recovered paper. The LEF is easy to operate, low-maintenance and self-cleaning. The energy requirement is low at 10 to 15 kWh/day. The LEF thus promises high energy savings of up to 50% compared with the model previously installed. Schönfelder Papierfabrik decided in favor of the new InfiltraDiscfilter in the BlueLine product line, along with other products. It guarantees that the pulp suspension is dewatered reliably and in an almost maintenance-free way. The core of the InfiltraDiscfilter is its bag-free BaglessPlus disc. This disc filter has an especially high capacity, since the filter surface is increased due to the corrugated surface. In addition, Schönfelder Papierfabrik chose a new dispersion system from Voith. Holger Hampel, Manager of Schönfelder Papierfabrik, emphasizes the success of this project: “You can rely on Voith’s quality. On the basis of the very good quality and performance data achieved from the very beginning, we were able to approve the system without warranty runs. The result simply convinced us.” Schönfelder Papierfabrik in Annaberg-Buchholz, Germany, produces more than 50,000 metric tons of graphic paper and specialty paper annually on a working width of 3,300 mm in a basis weight range of 45 to 120 g/m². The product line includes various paper grades such as offset, office, volume, envelope and improved newsprint as well as wallpaper base and liner paper. (Voith Paper GmbH & Co KG)

SMG/APP’s broken promise unchecked in Riau, Sumatra

Thu, 2013-05-16 01:00
Independent monitoring alleges the company’s wood supplier in Sumatra to violate APP’s forest conservation policy and clearance moratorium Pekanbaru, Sumatra – Field investigation by Eyes on the Forest (EoF) found that a wood supplier to the Sinar Mas Group’s Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) cleared natural forest during the SMG/APP imposed forest clearance moratorium in Riau Province, Sumatra. “This incident, as those reported by Kalimantan NGOs in March, occurred while APP and their consultant, The Forest Trust, were busy traveling the globe marketing the company’s new policy,” says Hariansyah Usman of WALHI Riau. “Important is what happens in the field, not what appears in marketing papers.” Eyes on the Forest investigators observed excavators felling natural peat forest trees in PT Riau Indo Agropalma’s (RIA) concession in Kerumutan, habitat of the critically endangered Sumatran tiger. SMG/APP has yet to complete independent High Conservation Value, High Carbon Stock and peat expert studies for these concessions which the company has said are pre-requisite for restarting of any development operations. “If SMG/APP is really serious about conservation, buyers would expect that APP priority step is to stop all and every deforestation and development action”, says Aditya Bayunanda of WWF Indonesia. “This supplier has cleared the last remaining forest in its concession, on deep peat soil in Sumatran tiger habitat without an independent HCV, HCS and peat assessments. Will APP and TFT once again claim that this was already privately agreed behind closed doors so is not a breach to the FCP commitments?” On 7 May, TFT published its 2nd progress report on APP’s policy implementation up to mid-April, giving the general impression that the policy implementation and stakeholder engagement went successfully. Eleven Indonesian civil society groups who participated in various SMG/APP/TFT organized ‘focus group discussions’, clearly do not agree and pointed out many outstanding weaknesses of the policy, and its implementation and monitoring in an open letter to the company on 24 April 2013. "NGOs’ findings clearly prove that APP is not implementing commitments it made”, says Muslim Rasyid of Jikalahari. “The violations show that APP is not genuinely committed to conservation and we fear the FCP campaign is just another greenwashing to the global market.” “Eyes on the Forest recommends that buyers and other business partners of APP remain very cautious and not do business with the company,” says Hariansyah Usman of WALHI Riau. “We suggest people do not believe TFT as the ‘independent observer’ APP markets them to be. TFT progress report cannot be believed without truly independent verification in the field.” The company insists its mills can continue to accept and pulp natural forest timber that it claims was felled before the moratorium started, creating a loophole which suppliers may utilize to feed wood into the mills from new deforestation in violation of the policy. Reports by West Kalimantan NGOS and Eyes on the Forest on cutting of tropical forest in three independent suppliers’ concessions indicated concerns that freshly cleared timber may be "laundered" into pulp mills. Unique study into the way consumers perceive paper quality

Fri, 2013-04-19 01:00
In November 2012 SCA carried out a market study in which 200 people selected at random were asked about the quality of two printed advertisements. This study compared GraphoInvent, a new, uncoated wood-containing paper from SCA produced for advertising material, catalogues and magazines, with a wood-free uncoated paper from the high-quality segment. Half of the respondents thought that GraphoInvent was the better paper and only one third preferred the wood-free uncoated paper. Product development in publication paper and better printing technology are opening the doors to paper with new properties. In the past wood-containing paper was used exclusively for specific segments/final products. The quality of a paper depends on how well a paper manufacturer can combine the different properties of the paper, e.g. strength, brightness, opacity and bulk. These properties are measured using laboratory instruments, but how they are perceived by customers is subjective and depends on experience, light conditions and personal taste. The results of the study show that if a product is developed successfully, there is no reason why wood-containing paper cannot compete with wood-free alternatives. This market study can be used to guide purchasers of printed communication that want to achieve the best impact for the money they invest. The study used a questionnaire that contained both open and closed questions, followed by structured interviews. The respondents compared both printed and unprinted areas and were able to make their own comments during the interviews. The study was carried out at central locations where a lot of people passed by. Although the light conditions varied, GraphoInvent was ranked as an exclusive high-quality paper due to its even printing surface and the solid feel of the paper. The properties that contribute most to these results are high bulk, opacity and light-scattering, as well as the paper’s formation and brightness. The unique element in this study was that an expert panel assessed the same material as the consumers. SCA R&D Centre contains a special perception laboratory and uses advanced methodology for visual assessments. A panel consisting of 38 experts with extensive experience of assessing paper and print quality showed an even greater preference for GraphoInvent (90%). Perceptual assessments help to identify and quantify quality-related properties that are difficult to measure using instruments. (SCA Forest Products AB)

Fri, 2013-04-19 01:00
Stora Enso has been included in Ethisphere Institute’s 2013 list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies. The Ethisphere list recognises companies’ ethical leadership, compliance practices and corporate social responsibility. This is now the sixth time running that Stora Enso has been selected for the list, and it is the only Finnish company and one of only five Nordic companies in the 2013 list. “Not only did more companies apply for the World’s Most Ethical Companies recognition this year than any year in the past, which demonstrates that ethical activity is an important part of many of these companies’ business models, but we are also seeing more companies be proactive and create new initiatives that expand ethics programmes and cultures across entire industries, such as industry-based ethics associations and other activities,” says Alex Brigham, Executive Director of Ethisphere. “We are excited to see the 2013 World’s Most Ethical Companies take these leadership positions, and embrace the correlation between ethical behaviour and improved financial performance.” The record number of nominations and applications this year is evidence of increasing regard for the list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies among various stakeholder groups and the desire of companies to be recognised for their integrity and ethical culture. The 2013 list is the largest since the award’s inception in 2007. “We are happy to receive this recognition again this year. Our commitment to global responsibility and ethical business practices will be further strengthened with the establishment of a Global Responsibility and Ethics Committee of the Board of Directors following our Annual General Meeting in April this year,” says Stora Enso’s Head of Global Responsibility Terhi Koipijärvi. Through in-depth research and a multi-step analysis, Ethisphere reviewed nominations from companies in more than a hundred countries and 36 industries. The methodology for the World’s Most Ethical Companies list includes reviewing codes of ethics, litigation and regulatory infraction histories; evaluating the investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looking at activities designed to improve corporate citizenship; and studying nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers. The Finnish forest industry in 2012: European economic crisis depresses forest industry production

Fri, 2013-04-19 01:00
– economic growth must be boosted, not hindered The main markets of the Finnish forest industry are in Europe, where the economic downturn showed no sign of relenting. The economic crisis further emphasises how significant the competitiveness of the Finnish forest industry is. “If we so desire, domestic decisions can help our competitiveness to be on the winning side once the European economy returns to a growth track,” says Timo Jaatinen, Director General of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation. “The upcoming spending limits negotiations and the Government's mid-term review must focus on promoting growth conditions and repairing the damage done to our competitiveness. The starting point for our nation's prosperity is formed by a vibrant and competitive export industry that can afford to invest and provide employment,” Jaatinen says. Retaining the competitiveness of the Finnish forest industry on even its present level calls for cost discipline. In addition to direct costs, expenses associated with other branches of industry cumulate in forest industry. Labour market negotiators, for example, must create solutions that do not raise costs in the export sector. Rising domestic costs cannot be transferred to product prices on the global markets. “We need immediate decisions on how to compensate, for example, the hundreds of millions of euro in extra costs the Sulphur Directive will cause to the export sector. Plans for a windfall tax that would punish the forest industry must also be dropped. Instead of implementing tax hikes, which burden industrial vitality, we should be looking for means with which to boost, not curb, economic growth,” Jaatinen says. Paper production in the red, paperboard showing signs of recovery In total, Finland produced 10.7 million tonnes of paper and paperboard in 2012; this is 5.6% less than in 2011. The fall in production volumes was due especially to the economic downturn in the main market areas of Europe, production capacity cuts and a fall in demand for graphic paper grades. Graphic papers, i.e. printing, writing and newsprint grades, account for about two-thirds of the Finnish paper industry's overall production. Production of paperboard for packaging use came to 2.8 million tonnes. Paperboard production volumes showed signs of a slight recovery in the final quarter of 2012 and this helped overall annual production to exceed the previous year's volume by about one percent. Pulp production totalled 6.8 million tonnes, up more than one percent from 2011. Pulp exports were up more than 12% from the previous year. Lengthy slump in construction activity kept wood products industry production in the red Sawn timber production was down 4% on the previous year and came to 9.3 million cubic metres. The volume of exports was slightly higher than in 2011, however. Domestic consumption decreased. Weak demand in Europe was compensated by growing demand in the Middle East and North Africa as well as by the ongoing rebuilding effort in Japan. The industry's raw wood costs were high relative to the market prices fetched by end products. This burdened especially the sawmill industry, whose raw material expenses account for some 70% of overall production costs. Annual timber sales were more subdued than on average. Energy and emission allowance prices remained moderate because of the economic crisis. (Metsateollisuus ry - Skogsindustrin rf / FFIF Finnish Forest Industries Federation)

Official Inauguration of Borregaard's Biorefinery Demonstration Plant

Fri, 2013-04-19 01:00
Borregaard has developed new technology for the production of green chemicals and sugars based on biomass from wood and agricultural and forestry waste. On Tuesday 16 April the Norwegian Finance Minister Sigbjørn Johnsen will officially inaugurate the biorefinery demonstration plant at Borregaard’s production facility in Sarpsborg. The demonstration plant, called Biorefinery Demo, started preliminary operations in summer 2012, followed by normal operations in the 1st quarter of 2013. The plant relies on Borregaard’s proprietary BALI technology and is a continuation of today’s biorefinery concept. The aim is cost-effective and sustainable production of lignin and bioethanol from new raw materials. BALI technology involves converting the cellulose fibres in biomass to sugars that can be used for the production of second generation bioethanol, while other components of the biomass (lignin) become advanced biochemicals. These products can replace petroleum-based alternatives, and the raw material cannot be used in food production. BALI technology consists of several processing steps and has given promising results in laboratory-scale testing. In the demonstration plant the process will be upscaled by a factor of 1000 times in order to test and develop the technology moving towards full-scale production. The plant has so far processed over 100 tons of biomass. "If we succeed with this project, we will be able to establish full-scale production of biochemicals with excellent climate accountability. Biorefinery Demo is a good example of how new technology can contribute to environmental solutions and also be commercially viable," says Borregaard CEO Per A. Sørlie. Construction of the demonstration plant has cost just under NOK 140 million, 58 million of which is investment funding from Innovation Norway's Environmental Technology Support Scheme. The BALI innovation project has also received NOK 19 million in funding from the Research Council of Norway and NOK 35 million from the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Development. Borregaard is one of the world's most advanced biorefineries. Today all the components of wood are used in the production of advanced biochemicals that can replace petroleum-based alternatives. Borregaard's specialty cellulose is used in e.g. filters, adhesives and plastics. Lignin, which binds wood fibres together, is the raw material for a range of products used in concrete admixtures, car batteries and animal feed products. Bioethanol is produced from the sugar in wood and is used in biofuels. Borregaard is the world’s only producer of the vanilla flavour vanillin from wood. (Borregaard ChemCell)

Erhardt+Leimer successful at ICE Europe

Fri, 2013-04-19 01:00
Erhardt+Leimer are looking back on their most successful participation yet in the ICE Europe. Compared to what they achieved at the ICE 2011, which was itself already a great success, they were able to top those results at this year's exhibition. In addition to the core business, attention was particularly directed towards the ELSIS surface inspection and the new ELTIM solution for thickness and basis weight measurement. More than 150 new customer contacts, bulging order books and a very high level of interest in the ELSIS and ELTIM solutions – with these results, Erhardt+Leimer's participation in this year's ICE Europe more than paid off. For Dirk Schröder, the sales division manager at E+L, the ICE once again confirmed the "outstanding position that Erhardt+Leimer holds in the market with its innovative and, at the same time, reliable solutions". The industry professionals were above all interested in the ELSIS surface inspection and the ELTIM solution for thickness and basis weight measurement. ELTIM in particular has attracted a great deal of attention since its market launch a few months ago. As a system solution, it permits monitoring of material thickness, weight and other relevant properties of a product during different production processes. Precisely matched components guarantee a more accurate, profitable and cost-effective production. The ELTIM solution was developed in cooperation with MeSys AG. It is based on the smart frame concept developed by MeSys. This concept allows a precise measurement of the individual layer thickness with an accuracy of 0.5% to 0.2% – even in combination with other substrates. Precise substrate mixture specifications or repeated calibration will lead to even better values. In combination with the tried-and-tested ELSIS surface inspection, the ELTIM solution offers a significant improvement in quality and profitability in the production process. Right from the market launch, sales manager Dirk Schröder described the ELTIM as a "highly attractive solution for the film and foil industry". This was confirmed even before the ICE Europe. The first sales successes were reported in Italy and the USA back at the start of the year. Following the significant demand at the ICE Europe, further positive headlines about ELTIM are inevitable.
