Boreal Mixedwoods 2012 – Ecology and Management for Multiple Values

Upcoming events Metla - Thu, 2012-02-02 12:22
From 2012-06-17 to 2012-06-20, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, IUFRO Unit(s) involved: 1.01.04
Mixedwood forests are an ecologically and economically prominent and important component of Canada’s boreal forest. A wealth of knowledge relating to the ecology and management of boreal mixedwood forests has been developed over the past 20 years, by researchers and forest managers. The Boreal Mixedwoods 2012 conference will provide a forum for presentation and discussion of current knowledge relating to the ecology and management of mixedwood stands and landscapes to achieve ecological, social and economic objectives. This includes evolving opportunities to improve the value of products being produced from these forests.

Sixth International Poplar Symposium (IPS-VI)

Upcoming events Metla - Thu, 2012-02-02 09:37
From 2014-07-13 to 2014-07-22, Vancouver, British Columbia (B.c.), Canada, IUFRO Unit(s) involved: 2.08.04
The proposed conference theme is based on a very relevant question: /Domestication of Populus and Salix: How far have we come, and how far do we still have to go?/The meeting in Vancouver will bring us an excellent opportunity to compare our views and assemble the "right answer." The answer will represent the view of the people interested in the science of poplar and willow genetics, physiology, and pathology. It will serve as a guide for the future of poplar and willow cultivation in the world. Ultimately, the answer should also be a guide for the amelioration of the environment, industries, and the standard of living of rural communities wherever poplars and willows are cultivated. This symposium strives to address these issues and therefore invites researchers, practitioners, regulatory and policy experts to help define what the challenges are and where we are going.

Douglas Fir Conference

Upcoming events Metla - Wed, 2012-01-25 11:45
Douglas fir is one of the most promising tree species facing the challenges of (a) increasing drought risks in European silviculture through climate change and (b) increasing demands for the valuable natural resource timber. However, knowledge on Douglas fir silviculture especially on drought risk exposed sites is limited and also research on the impact of Douglas fir on forest sites and on the total ecological processes in Douglas fir dominated forest ecosystems is scattered and implies contradictory results. The conference intends therefore to enhance the knowledge exchange on the potentials and risks of Douglas fir as mixed and leading tree species in forest stands, to identify knowledge gaps and to discuss how to organize research on Douglas fir in the European context.

International IUFRO 3.03.00 Ergonomic Workshop and Excursion: Ergonomic Challenges in Future Forest and Forestry

Upcoming events Metla - Mon, 2012-01-23 09:41
From 2012-09-27 to 2012-10-04, Nagoya, Japan, IUFRO Unit(s) involved: 3.00.00, 3.03.00
In many countries including developing countries, the forestry is still dangerous work. Even in Japan, the accident rate per 1000 workers remains 30, and approximately 50 workers have been lost annually in forestry. In such countries with many work accidents, forestry tends to be low mechanization, to have less work productivity, and to neglect environmental consciousness. Unfortunately, these countries including Japan implement hardly any safety, product, and environment managements in forestry. In this international workshop, we would like to deepen discussions on the way of managing safety, productivity, and environment in future forest and forestry by reference to the successful example in manufacturing industry which has achieved dramatically safe workplace since 1980's in Japan.
