Strong Q2 interim report from SCA
Forest and hygiene group SCA's pre-tax profit excluding non-recurring items was 2.196 billion SEK in the second quarter (2010). This was 25% better than what analysts predicted according to SME Direkt.
The corresponding period in 2009 profits were 1.575 billion SEK. The Shares in SCA were up 9% and +7.45% at the end of the day.
The tissue segment, which accounts for one third of the revenue was very successful. Operating margin of 7.9% (6.3 expected by analysts) which is a level that are expected to persist in the third quarter. The long term forecast 2011 is operating margin of 10% for the tissue business. Read more
Summer is a time when many mills shut down to perform annual plant maintenance. With lumber prices and housing starts at current levels, mills might have considered additional time off to tighten lumber supplies a bit. Pulp-production needs outweighing the need to limit lumber production so plants are coming back on line.

The first global assessment of mangroves in over a decade reveals that rare and critically important mangrove forests continue to be lost at a rate three to four times higher than land-based global forests, despite positive restoration efforts by some countries. About one fifth of all mangroves are thought to have been lost since 1980. Although losses are slowing at 0.7 per cent a year, the authors warn that any further destruction due to shrimp farming and coastal development will cause significant economic and ecological decline.
Economic assessments provide some of the most powerful arguments in favour of mangrove management, protection or restoration. Studies estimate that mangroves generate between US$2000-9000 per hectare annually, considerably more than alternative uses such as aquaculture, agriculture or insensitive tourism.

Higher prices for timber means that many forest owners choose to sell forest. The number of notifications of deforestation to the Swedish Forest Agency in June was record high reports the newspaper Göteborgsposten. In the month of June took the Swedish Forest Agency reported on the excavation of 40 000 hectares of forest in Sweden. For southern Sweden (Götaland),it was appoximately 13 000 hectares.
